Our EHS Goals

Our success in meeting our goals is built on the commitment of our employees, who strive to maintain a safe and healthy workplace, whilst delivering quality products to our customers with the minimum impact on the environment.

Environmental (base year 2005) & Product Stewardship
  • Reduce total waste (non-hazardous and regulated) 30% indexed to revenue.
  • Reduce water usage 20% indexed to revenue.
  • Reduce energy usage 20% indexed to revenue.
  • Reduce GHG emissions 20% indexed to revenue.
  • Reduce environmental incidents* by 50%.

    *Defined as releases to the air, water or land in excess of permit limits, and other spills or releases reportable to the government.

 

  •  Successfully apply the “Sustainability Review Gates” in the new Baxter Product Development Process (PDP) for all new medical devices developed from 2006-2010.
  •  Implement an electronic product “take-back” program to meet emerging customer and global requirements.
  • Develop an implementation plan to proactively eliminate certain hazardous substances* in our packaging and products.


*To meet maximum concentration limits for homogenous materials as defined in the EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium and brominated flame retardants

Occupational Health & Safety
  • Reduce work-related days lost rate to 6.0.
  • Implement a case management program in 75% of facilities with 25 or more employees.
  • Implement at least one health leading indicator in 90% of facilities with 100 or more employees
  • Reduce cases with days lost rate to 0.23.
  • Reduce recordable case rate to 1.27.
  • Implement at least one safety leading indicator in 90% of facilities with 100 or more employees.




Industrial Hygiene
  • Ensure that 95% of manufacturing and R&D sites have current industrial hygiene risk assessments and monitoring plans.
  •  Evaluate and define hearing conservation programs and then use engineering and administrative controls to reduce the need for employees to use hearing protection by 25 percent.
  • Specify the use of respiratory protection by establishing exposure criteria and then implement engineering and administrative controls to reduce the need for employees to use respiratory protection by 25 percent. 
Our UK Awards and Achievements

The British Safety Council award businesses on their occupational health and safety management. To date Baxter's manufacturing plant at Thetford have achieved the National Safety Award every year since 1982, celebrating 26 years of the award in 2008. Thetford have also achieved The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Gold Award for the 2nd year, showing their commitment to health and safety.

 

Northampton have also received the British Safety Council Award every year since 2000, so will be celebrating 8 years of the award in 2008.

 

Baxter's Head Office at Compton achieved great success when they achieved a special safety award in recognition of working over three million hours without an accident involving a lost time case - more than seven years.

 

These achievements come through the continuing effort of all employees, especially environment, health & safety (EHS) representatives working as a team with all staff to maintain a high level of safety.
