Our Producer Responsibility

Packaging and Electrical Waste

Producer Responsibility

At Baxter we are not only interested in reducing the environmental impact of our operations. We also strive to produce greener products, and manage the environmental impacts of these products throughout their life cycle.

Environmental aspects of our products

We have a system of assessing the environmental impacts of all our new products as early as possible in the design stage, known as the PDP (Product Development Process). We look at the raw materials used to make the product, the production processes involved, the use and the final disposal of the product and assessing its impacts from cradle to grave. This takes shape in a full life cycle analysis where possible.

Our Packaging Commitment

Within the medical industry the demands on packaging are very high. A package containing medicines or medical devices must be durable, hygienic and user friendly and meet all government and Baxter quality requirements. As part of our EHS programmes we take steps to minimise the amount of material used, and use recoverable and recyclable materials where possible.

An example includes:
* the introduction of a new cardboard case containing 75% recycled material, saving approximately 110,000 trees every year.

To enable the recycling of our products, we co-operate with other companies to supply recyclers with packaging waste through membership of a compliance scheme.

Through these schemes we recover and recycle plastic, paper and cardboard, aluminium and glass - breathing new life into Baxter's old packaging!

Our Electrical Products - Ecodesign and Takeback

Electrical Medical devices must be safe and reliable for our patients and customers. This commitment extends to the environment, and with these considerations in mind we are increasingly interested in developing products that minimise impacts on the environment throughout a products lifecycle. This includes design & development, use and at end of life.

To enable the recycling of electrical products at end of life in the UK, we are members of a compliance scheme, and are registered as a WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Producer.
