The PD academy is a three-day course designed to teach the principles of PD as a home therapy to renal clinicians, both medical and nursing.  The course is not affiliated to any particular institution or hospital.  However, PD Academy is fully accredited by the International Society of Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD). Up to 20 Royal College of Physicians CPD points are awarded to delegates who attend the course.  This well developed academic course is offered to clinicians who are motivated to grow their PD programme by challenging practice and improving patient outcomes in their unit.  A unit team may attend if they can demonstrate that this will benefit their PD programme through set goals and objectives.

The course equips attendees with the knowledge to provide the highest quality evidence based practice in PD therapy and has four broad aims:-

> To improve the quality of life and maximise the quality of care of PD patients

> To promote a philosophy of integrated care amongst renal clinicians

> To give confidence to those managing, developing or starting a PD programme

> To develop future thought leaders in PD

PD access academy is an accredited training programme designed to enable a renal unit to set up and run a medical PD catheter insertion service. It has been designed to guide participants through the process and equip them with the skills to deliver the service.  The course has been recognised and endorsed by the Renal Association and has been awarded 10 CPD credits by the Royal College of Physicians.

The course has been planned, designed and is run by a faculty of nephrologists, surgeons and nursing professionals recognised for their expertise in dialysis access insertion techniques.

Clinical education for trainee nephrologists does not always focus on dialysis. Three of the world’s leading nephrologists specialising in Peritoneal Dialysis have worked to produce the first interactive multimedia learning resource for PD.

This resource covers all aspects of the care of a PD patient from the physiology and mechanics of PD, through to initiating the therapy and continuing management of the patient. The learner can expect to understand more about how to maximise the quality of dialysis that the patient receives; minimise the risk of problems and effectively resolve issues if they do arise.

The site has been fully accredited by the renal association and CPD points are available on completion of the module.

The Home Dialysis Educational Web Site is an interactive, case study based learning tool designed to equip healthcare professionals with the relevant clinical knowledge that will help them discuss treatment options with patients and manage those people treated at home on dialysis.

The modular and interactive approach to education is designed to engage the learner and develop understanding and confidence in the different forms of home dialysis.

Baxter Clinical Nurse Specialists are highly valued in UK renal units for providing the latest PD therapy information to healthcare professionals.  In their role as PD consultants and educators they provide a high level of education for nurses, and can advise on the ongoing management of patients on peritoneal dialysis therapy at home, according to best demonstrated practice.  The Clinical Nurse Specialists also offer staff training on all Baxter computer software, which is designed to assist clinical teams in monitoring their PD patient programme to achieve optimal outcomes.

Baxter Training Nurse Specialists are expert PD trainers and offer valuable “Train the Trainer” programmes for new or inexperienced unit staff to learn and develop their skills, and maintain competencies within the unit.

The Training Nurse Specialists can also offer HomeChoice™ APD workshops for renal ward staff.  This service is highly valued by renal units due to the regular turnover of staff. The training usually consists of a series of workshops, again aiming to “train the trainer” to ensure competencies are cascaded across the whole nursing team.
