Surgeons have to hand a variety of tools to help them prevent or arrest bleeding during surgery.
Bleeding episodes occur that are too difficult to control by standard methods such as cautery or sutures.
Some surgical procedures can cause diffuse bleeding and from sites that are difficult to access.
Some patients may have congenital coagulation deficiencies or be under medication that has compromised their ability to clot as quickly or effectively as normal such as patients undergoing cardio-pulmonary bypass surgery.Whatever the reason, surgical haemostats are a useful addition to the surgeons toolkit.
